In the past, those with skin laxity had to resort to a facelift surgery in order to address their problems. This was a difficult choice for many patients due to the potential risks, downtime and cost involved. Thankfully, with the development of safe and non-invasive techniques for skin tightening and lifting, surgery is no longer the only option available to treat sagginess!
One of these non-invasive treatments include the facial thread lift, which involves inserting absorbable threads into the face. These threads have small barbed hooks to lift the skin, and also helps to stimulate collagen and tissue contraction for longer lasting results even after the threads have dissolved.
The procedure usually takes less than an hour, and is done under local anesthesia to maximise comfort. You may experience some mild bruising, swelling and soreness over the treated areas, but these are temporary and resolve within 1-2 weeks. Thread lifts are typically a “lunch-time” procedure, and you may return to work right away if preferred. You will be advised to avoid certain activities like rubbing your face vigorously or going for intensive exercise immediately, but most other normal routines may be resumed.
Some improvement can be seen immediately after the procedure, but maximal results will be visible after 3 months as the new collagen is formed around the treated areas. These results will last for 1-2 years, even after the threads have dissolved.
Thread lifts offer a subtle, natural lift and will not give you the same dramatic results as a surgical facelift. It is a good alternative for patients who are not ready for a higher risk surgery with significant downtime and cost. In order to maximise and prolong results, patients may consider a combination treatment plan with other non-invasive tightening devices like the HIFU or Ultherapy.
